Home Trends in 2020

I know this comes as no surprise that the tastes of homebuyers are changing. Home design and construction experts are making all kinds of exciting predications for 2020. I've included a handful of forecasts below.

In 2020, we'll see even more folks moving into urban areas as millennials seek the convenience of city living and older folks look to downsize. Homeowners want to be able to walk to restaurants and enjoy what urban nightlife has to offer. In Nashville, we see this in the increase in sales in areas like Germantown and Salemtown which are significantly closer to downtown than Nashville’s suburbs.

Experts predict buyers will be living in smaller but more open spaces. Formal living rooms will continue to disappear and eat in kitchens will replace formal dining rooms as more Americans place increased importance on cooking at home.  Plus, we all know it's the kitchen where guests gather when entertaining.

Experts also say our houses will be more futuristic. We'll have the power to lower the blinds, turn up the music, power up the oven, lower the AC and fire up the home theater at our fingertips.

Lofts are poised for a comeback. Buyers are attracted to the look of exposed construction and industrial elements. The unique features of lofts lend themselves to artsy and creative decor which is great for homeowners wanting to put their personal touch on their space. However, I can attest from personal experience, after living in a Chicago loft for 3 years, exposed beams means there’s not a lot of sound insulation and that can be super annoying. There were times my neighbors phone would ring and I would think it was mine.

Minimalism will continue to rule in design as buyers seek simplicity and the peace and calm of uncluttered spaces.

We’ll also continue to see more eco-housing and products as buyers turn to options that are friendlier to the environment like recycled materials. I had a client recently who asked me for a list of builders specializing in green home construction.

Ethnic elements of design are also predicted to be big in 2020.  No matter where I travel, I try to buy something I can put in my home. I love looking at things that remind me of my adventures and things that expand my own style sensibilities.  Not to mention artifacts from our travels are great conversation pieces.

And lastly, what are the colors predicted to brighten your world in 2020? Pantone predicts earthy tones like lush greens, deep browns and dark moody blues.  You can read about more of their color forecasts here.

So, cheers to 2020 and making how and where we live beautiful, convenient and more personalized than ever!
